2000-2008: New Landscape Series Oil Paintings
For the New Landscape Series I had been especially drawn to quickly disappearing, untouched preserve-land. I was attracted to the beauty in the rambling, unplanned, chaotic nature of the landscape. Many of the works in this series were painted plein-air and completed outside – others were worked on entirely in the studio, using smaller oil and watercolor sketches as inspiration and reminders.
It was exhilarating to paint a very large canvas outside. On windy days I had to tie the painting to the easle to keep it from blowing down. If you look closely, some paintings still have twigs and grass embedded in them from falling.
